about

Fisher Cat was inspired by a story my mother told me about her childhood. One night she and her brother were babysat by a teenager who jumped on top of the TV cabinet with a machete. No one was hurt but this image has stayed in her mind ever since (how could it not). I started envisioning this moment and tried to get inside the head of that teenager, practicing his machete moves alone and waiting for an audience. In my mind he became a fisher cat, elusive and bold.

At the time I was told this story I was reading The Last Farmer. The book tells the tale of a journalist's father trying to keep the family farm afloat as the land around him is being bought up for oil. In surrealness, the song fuses the world of rural life and one evening inside a small city apartment as its beginning touches on the exploitation and depletion of natural resources. A character travels back to where they found frogs as a child only to find that there are none left. The fences become lit by fire. A boy turns into a fisher cat.
